Manchester has always been a city that makes things happen.

Built on industry, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit, it’s a city that has continually evolved — and for the last 100 years, SF Taylor has evolved alongside it.

Our story began in 1926, when Sidney Francis Taylor started a business serving Manchester’s booming cotton industry.

Producing pattern cards for textile manufacturers, Sidney wanted greater control over the quality and service he could offer his customers. So, he invested in a hand-fed Furnival Platen printing press — fittingly, a machine that had itself been manufactured locally in Reddish.

That decision marked the beginning of SF Taylor.

From Cotton to Print, Marketing and More

Manchester has changed enormously since 1926, and so have we.

The cotton industry that shaped our beginnings has given way to new industries, technologies and opportunities. We’ve seen traditional printing methods transformed by digital technology, automation and intelligent workflows.

Through it all, SF Taylor has continued to adapt.

From our early days producing pattern cards to the wide range of print, creative, marketing, fulfilment and branded solutions we provide today, our business has always evolved around the changing needs of our customers.

But our Manchester roots have remained firmly in place.

We’ve experienced some defining moments here too. When fire devastated our Ancoats factory in 1982, the team salvaged more than 80% of the machinery, relocated operations to Reddish and returned to full production within just six weeks.

That determination and resilience feels particularly Mancunian — when something knocks you down, you get on with it and come back stronger.

Still Proudly Manchester

A century after Sidney Francis Taylor started the business, Manchester remains our home.

The city around us has transformed. Industries have come and gone, technology has changed beyond recognition and the way we work today would probably have been unimaginable back in 1926.

SF Taylor has changed too.

But we’re still an independent Manchester business, still proudly carrying our founder’s name and still guided by the same desire to help our customers that started it all.

That combination of heritage and progress is an important part of who we are — proud of where we’ve come from, but never afraid to change.

100 Years Later

The machinery has changed. The services we offer have changed. Manchester itself has changed.

But our belief in people, relationships, innovation and doing a good job hasn’t.

As we celebrate 100 years of Print, People and Progress, we’re proud to have spent that century as part of Manchester’s own story of industry, resilience and reinvention.
